Inter Pares joins 412 Canadians to call on the federal government to take immediate and concrete action to address the genocide in Gaza.

The open letter, sent yesterday to Prime Minister Carney, demands Canada do everything in its power to stop these atrocities and support efforts to bring those responsible to account. Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 2735—a resolution proposing a comprehensive three-phase ceasefire deal to end the war in Gaza—and the eve of Canada’s hosting of the G7 Summit.

Many Canadians are watching in horror as Israel commits genocide in Gaza and many are offering humanitarian support and political assistance. Meanwhile, polarization is deepening across the country as islamophobia and antisemitism are on the rise. Acts of violence and intimidation have left many people fearful to live out their identities in public and to speak freely.

As a Canadian organization, we call on our government to act urgently and strongly and affirm that these accountability efforts must be paired with working against polarization and acts of racism in Canada.

Today we reiterate our call to Canada to fulfill its legal and ethical obligations and its commitment to uphold the values of justice and substantive equality. As party to the Genocide Convention, Canada must take concrete and immediate action to avoid contributing to the continuation of irreparable harm in Gaza and to prevent genocidal acts.
