Inter Pares remembers Nathan Gilbert

Sep 05, 2025

Inter Pares is deeply saddened by the passing of long-time Board of Directors member, Nathan Gilbert.

Nathan’s principled courage and steadfast commitment to social justice left an enduring imprint on the movement for community economic justice across Canada. Nathan quietly put credibility and resources behind initiatives others deemed too risky, always privileging promise and community-led methodology over profile. In overthrowing institutional convention, he helped Canadian foundations unlock financing for grassroots organizing across Canada in the 1980s, strengthening local organizations and expanding their access to capital.

Nathan’s quiet presence—practical, humble and hopeful—modelled a politics of service rather than acclaim. He listened carefully in community consultations, helping to generate significant resources for grassroots initiatives, including some in which Inter Pares was implicated, foregrounding immigrant and racialized women’s leadership and supporting youth activism nation-wide. His work enabled lasting partnerships, leveraged other investors and directly strengthened organizations that continue to pursue justice today.

Nathan was committed to mutual accountability, to international solidarity grounded in respect, and to the belief that a better world is possible when we act together. Inter Pares is grateful to have counted Nathan among us, and we will endeavour to honour his trust and his legacy.

We are thankful to the many friends, family and colleagues who have made donations to Inter Pares in Nathan’s memory to commemorate his legacy of social justice activism and true solidarity.
