About the Tejedoras de la Imagen collective

Tejedoras de la Imagen (“Image Weavers”) is a Colombia-based collective of Indigenous artists and allies. They share an anti-colonial and anti-patriarchal ethos and a commitment to community-based audiovisual work.

Their work draws from the knowledge, histories and experiences of Embera Chamí, Gunadule, Murui and Mapuche peoples, and their own experiences of sexual and gender diversity.

“We view cinema and the visual arts as tools for healing and narrative sovereignty, through which we express our feelings and realities.”

Their work creates space for Indigenous communities to tell their own stories, in their own voices, while affirming identities and histories that have often been marginalized or erased.

About the exhibit

“This exhibition is an open book revealing who we are. Each member of Tejedoras de la Imagen has brought creations forth from her own hands, feelings and territories: lines, colours, sounds and perspectives in motion. Through illustrations, stories, graphic narratives, photographs and short films dedicated to water, anti-colonial resistance and ancestral diversity, we share our creations as a collective testament to healing, tenderness and community strength.” – Tejedoras de la Imagen

Art, storytelling and peacebuilding in Colombia

In Colombia, decades of armed conflict have unevenly impacted Indigenous peoples, women and LGBTQI+ communities.

Building peace requires more than ending armed violence. It also means addressing historical exclusion, challenging discrimination, strengthening democratic participation and creating space for communities to shape their own futures.

Through our partnership with Fondo Lunaria, a Colombian feminist fund supporting organizations led by young women and gender-diverse people, Inter Pares has supported grassroots initiatives that strengthen leadership, creativity and collective action among communities often excluded from funding and political decision-making.

Tejedoras de la Imagen emerged within this broader movement. Bringing together Indigenous filmmakers and artists from across Colombia, the collective uses audiovisual storytelling and visual art to reclaim narratives, celebrate ancestral knowledge, affirm sexual and gender diversity and foster dialogue grounded in Indigenous worldviews.

Their work demonstrates how art can contribute to peacebuilding by creating spaces for memory, visibility, dignity and collective imagination.

This exhibit is presented with support from Inter Pares and the Act Together for Inclusion Initiative.
