December 2008
Dear friends and supporters of Inter Pares,
In 2008, thanks to your generous solidarity, Inter Pares contributed more than $6.5 million in financial support as well as political and organizational assistance to sustain the work of our counterparts in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Canada. I hope that, like me, you will find inspiration in all that has been accomplished. I invite you to read through the attached overview of some of the highlights of our efforts this year and to share with us any questions or comments you may have about the work your support makes possible.
No doubt many of us have reason to be worried about the state of the world, and the very real difficulties most people face in order to live and build the futures they desire for themselves and for generations to come. At the same time, we also have reason to find hope in the solidarity, creativity, and courage of those who struggle to bring about change. These acts of human dignity and generosity remind us of the gift of our lives and the chance we all have to make a difference.
The struggle for justice, for humane and sane life on earth for all, is an ancient story and there is plenty of evidence that it is likely to remain unfinished. Nothing is guaranteed. Nothing is promised. And, still, as June Callwood said shortly before she died from cancer, "what you get is a life."
We thank you for placing your trust in Inter Pares and choosing to support our work. We will continue to do our best to honour that trust and to nurture learning and action that sustains lives and inspires our hope for the future.
Yours sincerely,

Molly Kane
Executive Director
P.S. Please join me in making a year-end gift to Inter Pares so that together we can continue to support people's struggles for democracy and justice around the world.

Publication: Canadian Role in Mining in Africa
Canada's engagement with Africa is frequently seen as 'progressive' or perhaps anodyne. But the reality is murkier. This special issue, jointly published by Inter Pares colleagues Pambazuka News and AfricaFiles, analyzes why Canada became a super power in mining investments; why Canadian Stock Exchanges are a global center for risky investments; the extent of Canadian involvement; and examines the new adapted diplomacy for new situations. The issue includes case studies from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, and a report on Canadian civil society efforts to get regulations passed by the government to make company activities more favourable to African peoples' interests.
