Social Solidarity: The Endangered Pre-requisite for Successful Development
Carleton University's School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) and the students associations of SPPA and the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) have put together an exciting program for a public forum on Saturday, February 9th in Ottawa to discuss "Social Solidarity: The Endangered Pre-requisite for Successful Development."
The four main speakers will be- Robert Wade of the London School of Economics (LSE), author of the highly influential Governing the Market and an invited member of the Financial Times' prestigious "Leading Economists" group;
- Alice Amsden of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), whose work on late industrialization is world-renowned, beginning with her seminal book Asia's Next Giant;
- Richard Sandbrook of the University of Toronto, author of several books dealing with the socio-political dimensions of Africa's troubled insertion into the global economy; and
- Molly Kane, Executive Director of Inter Pares and a particularly thoughtful and eloquent voice looking at these issues from the perspective of those in the NGO community.
The day is divided into two parts: a public forum in the morning and a graduate workshop in the afternoon. The forum runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Bell Theatre, Minto Centre at Carleton University ("MC" on campus map). A light breakfast will be available from 8:30 a.m. The forum will begin with some welcoming remarks and then a 30-minute introduction by Manfred Bienefeld, Carleton Professor and author of The Struggle for Development. Four 45-minute presentations will follow, concluding with 30 minutes of questions and answers from the floor.
Admission is free. This event is co-sponsored by SPPA, NPSIA, and the North-South Institute, with financial support from the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID).
