Action alert/film screening: Saffron Revolution anniversary
The end of September marks the second anniversary of the Saffron Revolution. Over the course of several weeks in 2007, a few activists who took to the streets grew into a movement of thousands of monks, nuns, elderly and youth – individuals risking their lives in cities all over Burma to stand up for democracy and peace. Their audacity was blunted by the military might of the ruling junta, but their spirit and commitment continues.
In collaboration with other Canadian NGOs and individuals working for change in Burma, we are encouraging Canadians to engage in this movement for peace. Inter Pares counterpart, Canadian Friends of Burma (CFOB), has produced a handout with three simple steps each of us can take and a postcard to sign and send to our prime minister. You can print your own copy of
this handout or if you would like to encourage more folks in your community, you can
contact CFOB to order a package of printed handouts.
We also wanted to let you know about an amazing documentary, Burma VJ, which will be screening across Canada over the next few months. This award-winning film which centres around an underground journalist during the Saffron Revolution has received rave reviews; the Globe and Mail’s four-star review is entitled
"Heartbreaking covert footage skillfully exposes Myanmar's thugocracy." The following is a list of upcoming confirmed screenings:
