Earthquake in Haiti
Along with the rest of the world, we at Inter Pares have been horrified and saddened by the devastation wrought by Haiti's January 12th earthquake. In addition to the incredible physical destruction, the country has lost thousands upon thousands of people who were parents, children, and siblings, but also vibrant contributors to Haitian society – artists, shop owners, politicians, activists, doctors, farmers, electricians, teachers, and so many more.
Inter Pares has been asked by some of our supporters as to how they can best financially help this country in crisis. While we do not work in Haiti, we support the transformative potential of civil society around the world; we can only imagine the terrible impact the earthquake has had on Haiti's civil society – the very people who need to be an integral part of the country's rebuilding efforts. There are Canadian organizations that are engaged in long-term community-based work in Haiti as well as immediate relief efforts. If you are looking to make a donation to support Haiti, you can visit the Web sites of any of the following organizations. All gifts will receive a charitable receipt; if you donate before February 12th, CIDA will contribute the same amount to its Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.
